Context (CMS Context)
See de Souza’s report in UCMAA paper archives for further information about this object and its social context, together with fieldwork photographs relating to the object. The following information is summarized from the report: ‘The wooden flipper is used with both the “batek” and the “antiparas” for sea spear fishing. However...Most of the time, people do not use flippers when they go fishing. One explanation for that given to me by the artisan is that if one does not really know how to use the flippers, one can drown. THat is also the reason Onel gave me for the ue of only one flipper at a time, and not a pair”.
