Context (CMS Context)
See de Souza’s report in UCMAA paper archives for further information about this object and its social context, together with fieldwork photographs relating to the object. The following information is summarized from the report: (bio): bought from Mrs. Barretto, a Pute who owns a store in Dumagipo. ‘Apart from spear fishing, usually done by men, the [goggles] are also used in the collection of octopus and shells, usually done by women with the assistance of a bamboo stick. Every single Agta family and many Pute families have [goggles]. However...these are very valued and people do not like to sell them”. De Souza describes the manufacture of the goggles and adds that ‘the most difficult materials to obtain are the glass and the rubber bands. Rubber bands are necessarily bought and the price is high’.
