Context (CMS Context)
See de Souza’s report in UCMAA paper archives for further information about this object and its social context, together with fieldwork photographs relating to the object. The following information is summarized from the report: “The fishing spear is a common object used both by Putes and Agtas. This one is particularly small and I think it was partially because of this that they sold it to me”, otherwise it was difficult to find anyone willing to sell her a spear. “This spear was bought from a family where he wife is an Agta and the husband is a Pute. Their son, Dyoy-dyoy made it. This family uses their spears very often, because they live very close to the beach...spears like this are rarely used in rivers...this family in particular has a good economic situation and many spears so they agreed to sell this one to me. However, usually a family only has one or two spears because both the metal and the rubber straps are very difficult to obtain, although many individuals are able to manufacture one”.
