Context (CMS Context)
See de Souza’s report in UCMAA paper archives for further information about this object and its social context, together with fieldwork photographs relating to the object. The following information is summarized from the report: ‘A very distinctive characteristic of the Agta is the great importance hunting activities have to their subsistence as well as to their culture and social systems...nowadays the Agta do not use bow and arrows too frequently for hunting...what they usually do is manufacture their own shooting guns...However, it is important to say that the “pana" is not a museum object for the Agta. There are many hunters, especially the elders, who still prefer to use it than a shooting gun...The “pana" was bought from Berning’s wife, Nailing. She needed some money...". De Souza goes on to say that she found the Agta very reluctant to sell these objects and that if Nailing had not needed the money, she probably would not have sold it.
