Context (Production / use)
The title of this publication is JOSZIF VISSZARIONOVICS STALIN: ROVID ELETRAJZ, or Joseph Visarionovich Stalin: Short History. This artefact might now be considered itself an ironic commentary on the propaganda and promotion efforts undertaken by the socialist state. Its 232 pages is anything but a truly short history. The exceptional imprinted image of Stalin on the cover marks the importance given over to this sort of publication amidst general restrictions on such fancy packaging. The text in gold colour lettering accords with the high status given over to objects celebrating the Soviet leader during his lifetime. The publisher if the SZIKRA, or Spark (Press), the publishing house established by the state in Hungary in order to specifically promote socialist titles. A prefacing page reads in red (the traditional communist colour), VILAG PROLETARJAI EGYESULJETEK!, or Workers of the World Unite! - the international socialist banner refrain. Originally written and published in Moscow in 1947. The present Hungarian edition published in Budapest in 1949.
