Context (Production / use)
Vietnamese socialist banner. The majority of such items were made in their country of depiction, largely as a direct result of the economic policy of self-sufficiency under state socialism that encouraged local production of smaller finished goods rather than their importation. The major exception to such policy within the Soviet Bloc was unfinished materials (raw resources) and extremely large-scale and/or costly items. Under the terms of the CMEA agreement, certain types of industry were divided between the participating countries in order to minimise duplication within the system and to increase a level of cross-dependancy directed by the Soviet Union. Such economic direct was given partial mandate by the Soviet Union’s postwar ability to tie in economic reparation demands upon each of the states within its sphere of influence.
