Context (Production / use)
The state socialist national emblem incorporated the traditional national colours of the Hungarian coat of arms and flag - and included socialist iconographic motifs such as the red star of communism and wheat sheaves of agricultural production. Of notice is also the bottom two banners, one the Hungarian tricolour, the other the red flag of Communism imported as a symbol from the Soviet Union. For MAY DAY, all public buildings in Hungary were required by the authorities to display both flags in tandem. Hence, most buildings in Hungary to this day possess two flag holders at their front entrance. These flag holders are still used in Hungary, traditionally on the 20th of August - but since 1989 only Hungarian flags are seen to be installed.Such small printed posters were a ubiquitous site through workplaces and public buildings of all kinds under state socialism.

Colour poster printed on cream paper, depicting the official state emblem of the People’s Republic of Hungary. Possibly printed by Offset. The emblem consists of a red, white and green striped shield within a blue circle with radiating brown stripes, surrounded by a wreath of wheat sheaves, with a red star at the top and a red, green and white striped ribbon at the bottom.
