Context (CMS Context)
Some of the Solomon Islands objects given by Lady Violet Beaumont were originally in the collection of Charles Morris Woodford. The incised inscription on the shell (‘Gavutu S.I. / May 23 1903’) might indicate that this was one of the Woodford objects.

Description (CMS Description)
Pendant of mother of pearl carved in open work with frigate bird motifs. A small lug at the top, pierced with two small holes through which is strung a cord of twisted fibre. There is an intentional slit in the top bar and a longer deep incision running further into the bar, indicating that the maker intended to remove a sliver of material and did not go through with it. The surface of the shell is incised with a very light incision that reads: ‘Gavutu S.I. / May 23 1903’.
