This object was previously in the collection of Harry Geoffrey Beasley, no.3441. It is recorded in Beasley's original acquisition register (vol.3) as: 'SOLOMON GROUP: - A canoe ornament in the form of a head with prognathous snout. Painted black over most parts & with pearl shell inlay some of which is missing. Bought: - V.C. Martin, 1 [...] Road, Kentish Town, N.W.S.' It was purchased on 20 March 1934 [Lucie Carreau, 08/09/2017].

Fairly large wooden head with lug carved at the back for use as a canoe prow. Prognathous features. Lines of 'H' or 'X' -shaped pearl shell pieces inlaid on the side of the head, under the eyes and in place of eyebrows - inlays are damaged and many are missing. Two incisions on either side of the head - for insertion of removable ears? Round cap on the head, slightly chipped. A few large cracks.
