Catalogue card 1 reads [handwritten in black ink:] '23.93 a.b.c.d.e Melanesia (Solomons & New Hebrides). Five fish-hooks [underlined]. a.b.c. [underlined] of mother of pearl made to represent small fish no barb is made as they are made for flying fish which bite the bait and are not able to disgorge it. From Ulawa [underlined] and Malaita [underlined] Ids. Solomon group. d. [underlined] made from Turtle shell. used for ['bonito' crossed out in black ink] reef fishing in San Christoval [sic]. Solomons. fr: Bia at N.W. end. e. [underlined] of Turtle shell used for Bonito and fish of same size and weight. now many seldom made as hooks of [word unclear] [?]make but come into unusual [illegible]. From [?]Oba [underlined] [sic ?Aoba now Ambae]. New Hebrides. (i.e. Leper's Id) but it is not certain that they are all made there. C & D. Rev. Wm Hy. This hook is mounted in a wooden box with glass front measuring 10.8cm long, 6 cm wide, 1.7 cm high along with Z 294 A-B, Z 295, Z 296 A-B. The number 1923.93 D has been mistranscribed as 1923.930 on the reverse of the wooden box, which lists the accession numbers in black ink. White label inside box handwritten in black ink reads 'Hooks for Reef Fishing. BIA [underlined]. San Cristoval [underlined]. [Heather Donoghue 13.06.2012]
