Note on catalogue card reads: 'Beasley (H.G) sent a note to Museum stating that "Mr J. Holmes' surveyor to Lever Bros [Brothers], who visited Mala in 1911-12 stated to me that inlaid mace were recognised as being payments for a head. A chief gives out that he will pay for the head of a certain person, usually another chief, & the man who secures it receives amongst other property, one of this maces which he wears hung by the cord round his neck. The native exchange for a mace in 1911-2 [back of card] was about 10/- worth of trade goods. Mr Holmes saw but few. They were made only at the East end of Mala and were called Waru Hau (Hau = stone)'.
