Context (Analysis)
A letter in the MAA archives W06/1/15 from Jerry J. Brody, Director, Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, University of New Mexico, Alberquerque, 2 December 1975 to Margaret Risbeth, may refer to this rug.

It refers to a Navajo rug inherited from Margaret's mother, and notes that a 'pattern of serrated diamonds in an expending series was popular from about 1875 to 1920 and is still made occasions... Because of the restrained colour of your specimen, I would guess it was made not long before your mother acquire it in 1909.'

Brody references comparable examples in MAA's collections of about this period with quite dissimilar designs- 1962.182- a saddle blanket made with commercial yarn (Germantown) in about 1906 and 1947.61 A a wearing blanket made for a woman or child in about 1880 of natural and aniline dyed handspun.

Description (Physical description)
Woven rug in three shades of brown (dark brown, mid brown and a cream). Body of the rug is in mid-brown with a zig-zag woven pattern of dark and light making a large diamond shape. Each end has a dark stripe and a light stripe, and the four corners have small woollen tufted tassles. One side of the rug is significantly faded. Hem edges are fragile.

Woven rug with chevron motif in brown and cream. Rectangular rug woven from wool in brown, light brown and cream; central area is decorated with zigzag lines arranged as chevron expanding from the centre; four stripes along the short edges; small tassels in each corner; most of the warp is cream, with one section in red.
