'Old typed large luggage-style label, possibly by Ridgeway or Seligman, reads:'These objects apparently made of pieces of cassowary leg bones I bought in a lot with various objects from New Guinea. But as the ornament and pigments are not New Guinea according to Haddon, and as they must come from a region where cassowaries occur, they are probably Indo-nesian. As in New Guinea feathers of the cassowary are used as amulets to give courage and strength from the terrific kick given b=y the bird, it may be that these rings were used for a like purpose. Certainly parts of the bone which give the kick ought to be good medicine.'
