Catalogue card reads [handwritten in blue pen:] 'Z 30166. MELANESIA. FIJI. Mat of pandanus strips plaited, decorated with wool. 69 ins x 48 ins. 175 cms z 122 cms. One of 9. Hayter - 5.5.32.' A small round red sticker pasted to the front of the card. On the back of the card [handwritten in blue pen:] 'rolled'.

Following research undertaken during the Fijian Art research project (2011-2014), this type of fine and very flexible mat with wool embroideries is thought to originate from Rotuma.

Description (CMS Description)
Large rectangular mat woven from strips of pandanus leaves.Very supple. Strips about 0.3 cm wide. All edges are provided with a small fringe of thin strips. Woollen embroidery throughout. Three bands of motifs in the central part: A double line of zigzags in red wool; a series of 8 stitched rectangles in red and purple; a series of 14 stitched rectangles in red and grey. Along one of the short edges, a series of 10 stitched rectangles placed diagonally in red and purple. Some stitches in red and purple/dark blue along the edges. Some parts of the fringed have been intentionally caught into the woollen stitching at the back. Good condition.
