Description (CMS Description)
Carved canoe prow ornament stained black with pearl shell inlay decoration. The face is prognathic with an open mouth showing teeth, which are stained red. Facial markings are delineated by pearl shell inlays in the form of reflected 'barava' motifs, which extend along the chin line and around the eyes and cheeks. The eyes are made from oval pearl shell with a turquoise bead in the centre to indicate the pupil. The ears are in-filled with red paint and the earlobes are represented with pearl shell inlaid earplugs, which are decorated with a band of incised reverse 'Z' or 'asepaleo' motifs. The figure is wearing a conical shaped hat painted with three horizontal bands, beginning at the bottom in white, followed by red and the final band consisting of intersecting blue and white triangles. The hands are pressed together with the thumbs extended upwards to meet the chin; the fingertips have broken away at the front. The back of the ornament has an un-stained projection with two squared holes at the top and bottom. [Heather Donoghue 25.06.2012]
