Description
Uhin. Reindeer halter, comprising a flat band of hide with appliqué textile stripes in red and black along its length. The ends are tasselled and there are also tassels hanging from the bottom of the band, ornamented with squirrel skin (which may originally have had white and grey fur). Upwards, from the top of the band, extend two tapering strips of leather.

Note by Lindgren on catalogue card for 1937.816: 'For information, see [19]37.815. [These halters are of the more elaborate type & each Tungus possesses usually not more than 3 or 4 of such, the ordinary halters having only a tanned leather fringe, often without even bands of coloured cloth. The halter is kept in place on the reindeer's forehead by means of the 2 leather thongs on either side, which are tied behind the antlers. The reindeer is tied or led by a long chamois strip attached to the back of the halter; this is missing on one of these halters. The strings of brown & white fur on one halter are fox, the grey & white are the other squirrel].'
