Description

Figure of a seated man made of wood with inlay around the eyes and lines incised on the face, arms and legs. The incision on the face is to represent tattooing. A bead serves for each eye bound by a pearl shell ring to represent the lashes. On the head is a wooden dish to form the bowl.

Description (CMS Description)
This figure is probably a female figure. Light wood stained black. incisions on arms and legs to represent body ornaments and on the face to represent tattoos. Red pigments visible on stomach, lower back and upper arms and within the facial incisions. Eyes inlaid with a flake of obsidian and a serrated ring of shell.

Accession Register volume 1, page 11 reads: 'E 1916.37-38. Two squatting human figures on flat stands. One with round bowl on head has the eyes set with an obsidian flake in a ring of pearl shell [E 1916.37]; the other with shell ring [E 1916.38], and both show facial marks.
