A number '18 is written on the rear of the shield, presumably the sale lot number. An adhered handwritten paper label notes 'Parrying shield/Australia'. Added later '?A v Hugel'. From South Eastern Australia, New South Wales/Victoria, probably along the river system. Notes by researcher Jonathan Jones, Wrdjuri Kamillaroy language group.

R.1904.933.'; The Annual Report for 1904, p.8 'In those cases in which the objects have not been presented directly, but have been purchased with money subscribed to the Museum Accession Fund, an asterisk is prefixed to the name of the donor.' [later addition handwritten in blue ballpoint:] 'Purchased at Freemantle Sale' and the 4 in 1904.933 has been overwritten with a 5. 1904.933 seems to correspond with the annual report.
