Context (CMS Context)
The pou has a rectangular waha paepae slot for a rafter at the top so it seems probable that it was once part of a whare and probably earlier than the 1870s. The bottom of the pou has rotted so may have been in the ground at this level or…..it may have been much taller with another complete figure. Notes by Jeremy Treadwell, Senior Lecturer, School of Architecture and Planning, University of Auckland, via email 4 August 2016

Previously noted on the database as purchased at the 1905 Webster's Sale with money provided to the Acquisitions Fund by Julius Werner, which matches the Z register fro Z 6339. However, the 1905 Accessions Register notes it was 'Bought 1886 at G. Gardener's, Furniture Dealer, 219 Brompton Road, London. (As part of the List of possible dealers who Pitt-Rivers dealt with over collecting career, the Pitt Rivers Museum lists a pottery dealer, G Gardner's of 209 Brompton Road which may be the same person.)
