Description (Physical description)
Skirt made from the dressed fibre and leaves of New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax), ornamented with red and green wool. The garment is in an extremely fragile state, and parts have already disintegrated. The waistband, which is a three-stranded plait incorporating the warps, is now almost completely detached.
The body of the garment remains mainly intact, although many cylinders have fallen off. Wefts are about 35mm apart, four stitches to the centimetre. Red wool is snaked through the wefts across the body of the piece and attached in toggle-like decorations. Toggles of khaki-green wool are woven in near the waistband and down the sides of the garment. Cylinders coloured with red ochre are interspersed across the piece.
