Description
Soapstone carved figurine in light brown colour. Modern replica. Kneeling human figure wearing a conical headdress. Facial features carved in low relief. Long arms by the side. The back of the head is carved with vertical lines while on the back, there's two circles and a rectangular carved out, possibly part of the clothes. Feet beneath the figurine with a slightly convex base.

Handwritten note affixed into the 1917 Accession Register reads: 'Given by Mrs Scarlett, of Renenden House, n[ea]r Maidstone. Aztec or ancient Mexican idol. Perfectly authentic relic, brought by the Hon. P. Campbell Scarlett C.B. then our B[ritish] Minister in Mexico, to England on his return, 1866. Florence Scarlett. 20th August 1917'. Addendum in von Hügel's hand that it was given 'to the "Red Cross Gift House".
