Description

Small shell adze or axe made from the lip of a queen conch (strombus gigas). Roughly triangular in plan and concavo-convex in cross-section. Curved cutting edge, slightly bevelled on lower face, tapering to a pointed butt end. Polished throughout.

The Accession Register tentative suggested the Griffith collection as the source of this object. However, if the date on the label is 1883, then this is very likely to be incorrect -- Rev. Griffith's Caribbean material was collected in 1872 and 1873, and donated by his brother in 1918. Therefore he has been removed from the Source field.
