Context (Analysis)
Catalogue card in Louis C.G. Clarke's handwriting reads: 'Wallis of City and County of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery saw this and his remarks about [19]22.103 apply to this implement as well. See Index Card [19]22.103." A further note says, "Probably West Indies. LCGC."
The note in Clarke's hand on card 1922.103 referred to above reads: 'Wallis of City and County Museum of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery writes 'Although this axe is reputed to have come from the Horse Race at Failand, it is quite unlike any other axe found in the Bristol District so that one rather questions this statement. The axe is of a material which is very much like jade and it is doubtful whether it is British at all.''

Glaucophane schist.

Context (Analysis)
The words "Failand, SOM" are clearly written on the object. The catalogue cards also record this information, without the West Indies cards noted by Mary Hill Harris (see above) which apparently have comments regarding its locality. The true provenance is thus not totally clear, but provisionally should be considered Failand.
