Context (Acquisition Details)
Rev. William Griffith's Caribbean collection was collected between 2 October 1872 and 2 July 1873, whilst he was acting tutor at Codrington College, Barbados. It was donated to the museum in 1918 by his brother, Arthur Foster Griffith, likely following the death of Rev. Griffith that same year.

Context (Analysis)
Examined by Ronald Taylor, Director of the Barbados Museum, on 2 June 1977. He notes: 'Large stone axe labelled as "field nr CCodrington College, etc.' is almost certainly a curiosity brought to the Island from perhaps Antigua where the Codrington family owned large properties Stone is Northern Leewards in origin.' Stone adze. Straight cutting edge with large chips; rounded sides with a lenticular cross-section; flat butt. Ground surfaces. Mottled grey stone.
