Labels & inscriptions: A small rectangular cream label attached to it. It reads [handwritten in black ink:] '1918.213 (31). Fiji Islands. Stanmore Colln. 1912'. A very large label attached to it reads [printed in black ink:] 'Forwarded by .... Date .... UNIVERSITY MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND OF ETHNOLOGY, CAMBRIDGE'. [stamped in black ink three times:] 'FIJI' and [in black crayon:] '1919 (sic)-213 (31) Stanmore collection'.

Catalogue card reads [handwritten in blue pen:] '1918 213 (31) MELANESIA FIJI. A number of baskets: oblong + oval with cusped base. There are 17 baskets. 10 have been given Z nos. (see over). G. A. M. Hamilton-Gordon. 2nd Baron Stanmore (See 1st card).' [stamped in red ink:] 'CUMAA 16 JUL 1987 TRANSCRIBED'. A small round red sticker pasted on the front of the card. The back of the card reads [handwritten in blue pen:] 'Z 3577; Z 3578; Z 3580; Z 3581; Z 3582; Z 3601; Z 3602; Z 3603; Z 4064; Z 4066'.

Description (CMS Description)
Large oval basket plaited from strips of natural colour coconut palm leaf. The inside of the rim is decorated with two length of 3-ply plaited hibiscus fibre. The weave of the basket forms a criss-cross pattern. A harness of 3-ply plaited pandanus leaf is woven in and out of the basket on both sides. The end plaits are visible inside the basket, along the bottom and knotted in the centre of the basket.

Note about the series of baskets accessioned under 1918.213.31: 18 baskets + 1 harness were found with the number 1918.213.31. Only 10 (A, B, C, D, G, H, J, L, M, and N) had a specific letter attached to them. K is not a basket but a harness: it is unknown which basket this harness originally belonged to. In order to distinguish between the remaining 8 baskets, letters remaining from the A-Q sequence was attributed to the un-lettered baskets. These are NOT the original letters. Two additional letter (R and S) were created to accommodate the two remaining baskets that did not fit in the lettered sequence.
