Context (Field collection)
Catalogue card, note by David Phillipson: 'These types of painting are brought from surrounding villages of Northern Ethiopia to the cathedral precinct in Aksum. During the festival of Hidar Tsiom, which is held in November, people establish a bazaar in the precinct to sell items with ecclesiastical connotations. It would have been made with the intention that the buyer would paste it to the wall of their local church. Purchased in November 1995 for 100-200 Birr, approximately £10-20, although this price was inflated, and it would have been sold for much less in the local exchange system.'
