Carved wooden bottle stopper. Comprises of a rounded top with a triangle above topped by a flat circle, and a long protrusion below which narrows towards the tip; two smaller triangular cut outs present within the larger triangle. Object has possibly been coated in an unknown substance, which has started to crack.

Description (Physical description)
Bottle stopper. Inverted triangle with two triangular holes in the middle. Round flat carving on top of the triangle. No harness hole. Design is not representational, graphic. Side of triangle incised carving, with three lines. Rim of the round top is also incised, as is the base of the stopper, which gives it some symmetry. Information provided by Dr Ohioma Pogoson, Honorary Curator of the Museum of the Institute for African Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. November 2012.

Context (Acquisition Details)
Collected by Northcote W. Thomas in Edo State, Okpe town. The inhabitants belong to the Edo ethnic group, and also identify themselves further as Okpe people. The language they speak is also referred to as Okpe. See Blench, R. M., 1995. The Work of N.W. Thomas as Government Anthropologist in Nigeria. The Nigerian Field, 60, pp.29.
