Replacement catalogue notes Freemantle Sale and gives the provenance only as 'Benin' and places it within Nigeria, referencing the Kingdom of Benin. There is no mention of Benin City and thus the provenance of Benin City has been retained but queried.

The narrow term 'Benin' has been used within the museum and more widely to refer to the both Benin City as well as the Kingdom of Benin and both terms have therefore been added to the place field with queries to show the original provenance.
