"King" manilla. Curved copper bar, with slightly expanding ends, 12 1/2" = 35 cm long with deep grooves and ridges. Band of punched rings and dots at either end.
[reverse of catalogue card reads:] i. cf specimen slightly small in B. Mus "made in Birmingham about 1856 for trade". 2. cf specimen in Hull Museum used as price of slave. 3. cf fetish hut. S. Nig. destroyed by foot order in 1905 now in B. Mus. pile of mainllas, many of this thick and heavy (but undecorated) type, many still thicker and heavier "probably currency" H. J. Braunholtz

Context (Analysis)
In January 2017, Prof. Marcos Martinon-Torres and Agnese Benzonelli, UCL Institute of Archaeology, tested this idno using a portable XRF as part of a programme of base metal analysis of Benin material. This object was tested twice and the results are as follows: 1) Cu: 81.59%; Zn: 13.62%; Sn: 0.73%; Pb: 3.37. 2) Cu: 81.73%; Zn: 13.53%; Sn: 0.73%; Pb: 3.26%.
