Description

Tobacco pipe. Consists of a cane shank with a ceramic bowl attached to one end, and a gourd mouthpiece attached to the other end. Bowl and gourd are connected to stem with pieces of hide; fibre string is wrapped around the shank at multiple points. Bowl is modelled in the shape of an animal, possibly a hyena; the animal has two ears, a central ridge along the top of the head, and a wide open mouth; the animal body is decorated with black and white stripes and incised patterns. Bowl previously broken and repaired.
