Description
Basket; Container; Food Vessel - A transportation basket used by women for big loads of rice or sweet potatoes. Hand-woven from anes bamboo strips (Schizostachyum Lima), with bamboo rim and base. This type of women's transportation basket is the largest among those still being used in central Bontoc. When its load is heavy, women usually put the Luwa underneath it to make carrying it on their heads manageable - the Luwa has the advantage of having rattan handles. Contemporary (ie. 1996-1997). Purchased for CUMAA for 200 pesos (£6) from Mrs Julia Bete on 9.7.97. Mrs Bete bought this basket from a weaver in Can-Eo. They are renowned weavers in central Bontoc. (It was bought in November 1993). Bibliographic references: Jenks (1905), The Bontoc Igorot; Lane R. (1986), Philippine Basketry, Bookmark, Manila. Jenks (1905) notes that the tayaan is made only in Bontoc and Samoki.
