The print was obtained with the assistance of the Crowther Beynon Fund as part of Anita Herle's background research for "Torres Strait Islanders: An Exhibition Marking the Centenary of the 1898 Anthropological Expedition" (July 1998 - December 2000). Exhibited in the contemporary arts section. The artist, Alick Tipoti (originally from Badu Island) is one of a small but growing number of contemporary Islander artists. At the time of collection Alick (with Dennis Nona) was one of two Islander artists who were studying at the Fine Arts School of the Australian National University in Canberra. Both artists are known for their innovative use of "traditional" imagery. Their work often incorporates representations of historic Islander artefacts (including material collected by A.C. Haddon). The picture was framed for exhibition with the assistance of the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Card 1: 'Lino block print entitled "Nagaw Lagaw Gub" (My Island Wind). Black ink on white paper with green highlights. Print emphasises the importance of the sea and the wind to Islanders. Central image of old style canoe with outrigger and mat sails. In the sea below are numerous sea creatures with octopus, hammerhead shark, turtle, crocodile and dugong highlighted with green paint. Coconut water carriers, warup (drum) and weris (fish scoop) shown on the top right of the print. Large circular pearlshell ornament of the type worn by the geregere le (parrot men) in the Malo Bomai ceremonies is depicted on the top left. This type of openwork pearlshell ornament depicted in the print is extremely rare. There are 2 known examples from the C19th - one in the Haddon collection at CUMAA (Z 9443) and one in the British Museum. Print number 4/50, signed by the artist Alick Tipoli and dated 1996.
