Catalogue card reads [printed:] 'Z 39432. MELANESIA. FIJI. "Gunstock" Club. Length 95 cms. "Zigzag patterns on upper half of head. Lower portion has rugged surface with rows of holes, probably formerly bearing shell inlays. One such inlay survives in upper part of head. Original von Hugel number: O.X.201.H. Other labels bear numbers "169", and, in pencil, "31". Label on handle reads: '22c. Via Via Gata. Massacre of Koro Waiwai 1820. Found on battle-field.' Von Hugel coll.' [added in black pen:] 'Also on butt in white ink V.e'. [added in black ink:] '(Centenary Exhibition).

Description (CMS Description)
Spurred club of dark wood, gata. The head is triangular in section, curved and carved with a small lip (tebetebe) at the top. 6 circular recesses have been carved at the top of the head. One still contains a white shell bead. The underside of the head is carved very roughly to resemble tree bark and carved with 32 circular recesses into which beads might have been inlaid. The cutting edge of the head is pierced with a small circular hole. The spur is short with a smooth flat surface at the top. The back of the head and top of the spur are carved with rough lines. The back of the spur is carved with tavatava patterns in low relief and the sides are provided with recesses (6 in total). One is still inlaid with a shell bead. The shaft is circular in section. The handle is carved with tavatava patterns in relief. The butt is chipped, flared and convex with a broken oblique hole.

Viavia gata. Massacre of Koro Waiwai 1870. ...found on battle field).' A small rectangular cream label pasted on the shaft reads [printed in black ink:] '169'. A rectangular cream label glued on the shaft reads [in pencil:] 31'. 'O.X.201.H.' inscribed in white ink on the shaft.
