Catalogue card, note from David Phillipson: 'Maria Theresa silver Thalers were the principle currency circulating in Ethiopia during the nineteenth century and early decades of the twentieth century. They continued to be produced in Europe, still dated 1780, into the 1930s. They are still frequently worn as jewellery in Ethiopia and are now being replicated in aluminium.'
