Description (CMS Description)
Necklace (waseisei) composed of tusks carved from strips of sperm whale tooth, 28 in total. Each tusk is pierced at the top and strung on a cord of twisted hibiscus fibre. An additional cord of 3-ply plaited coir is woven around the cord and between the teeth. After the last tooth, on each side, a piece of European string has been tied around the vegetable fibre cord. The tip of the eighteenth tooth from the left is pierced. The tusks are of a cream-grey colour at the front and a yellow-grey colour at the back.
