Description (CMS Description)
Necklace (sisi). Eleven whale teeth pierced at the top and strung on a cord formed of 4 strands of 3-ply plaited coir and thin length of cane. Several pieces of barkcloth are woven around the cord and between each teeth, forming a triangular pattern at the front. From the left: the first tooth has a deep notch at the top. The tip of the second tooth is slightly chipped at the back. The fifth tooth is engraved with several scrimshawed elements: a water mill with two wheels, a square made of 3 x 3 very small dots, a cross-hatched crescent (maybe a canoe?) with what could be a turtle underneath, a heart with a double outline, with regular small dark dots carved between the two lines. The seventh tooth from the left has split on the side. The tenth tooth from the left has an additional hole at the top. Very heavy. The teeth are light yellow in colour at the front and a darker shade of yellow at the back.
