Description (CMS Description)
Necklace (waseisei) composed of tusks carved from strips of sperm whale tooth, 27 in total. The necklace is now broken: a fragments is formed of 11 tusks, another of 8 tusks, another of 4 tusks, another of 2 tusks and finally, 2 single tusks. Each tusk is pierced at the top and strung on a cord made from two twisted strands of 3-ply plaited coir. The ends of the cord are tied into a knot. One of the tusks is severely chipped. The necklace is of a light honey colour at the front and more intense honey colour at the back.
