Description (CMS Description)
Necklace (waseisei) composed of tusks carved from strips of sperm whale tooth, 23 in total. The necklace is incomplete - there would have been additional tusks on either side. The last tusk to the right of the object has been reattached to the object with a piece of metal. Each tusk is pierced at the top and a cord of 3-ply plaited coir binds the tusks together. One of the central tusk is split at the front and at the back. Most of the tusks are engrained with dirt. 'Z 29413' inscribed in black ink on the side of one of the end teeth. A round label with metallic edge is attached to the top of the necklace and reads [handwritten in black ink:] 'Z 29413' on one side and 'Coote Collection 1880' on the other side.
