Description (CMS Description)
Necklace (waseisei) composed of tusks carved from strips of sperm whale tooth, 26 in total. Each tusk is pierced at the top and strung on a cord of 2-ply twisted vegetable fibre (?hibiscus). An additional length of 2-ply twisted string is woven between the top of the teeth. The tip of five of the teeth is lightly chipped. The front and the back of the necklace is of a light cream colour. 'Z 29408' inscribed in black ink on the side of one of the end tusks. A large cream label attached to the cord reads [handwritten in black ink:] 'FIJI Necklace of sperm whales teeth. Not registered, part of Miss Stewarts gift. 1937-321-325.' and [added later:] 'Z 29408'.
