Description (Physical description)
Turtle-shaped yaqona bowl carved from a solid piece of vesi wood. The head of the turtle is facing down when the bowl is used. Light brown patina inside. Flat serrated back legs and triangular tail project from one end of the dish. The front flippers embrace the curve of the dish (one is placed higher than the other). The tip of one of the front flippers is serrated. Oval head with a triangular nose at the other end. Two circular holes mark the nostrils (one higher than the other) and a curved incision marks the mouth. Two circular incisions mark the eyes, one being inlaid with a blue glass bead. A slight ridge connects the back of the head to the tail. The lip of the bowl has serrated incisions. A large crack extends from near one of the legs of the bowl inwards into the bowl, covering almost half of the length of the object. A large chip is visible on the lip near the tail of the turtle [L. Carreau, 03/02/2012].
