Large shell pendant made from the shell of a spondylus, of a bright orange colour. A hole pierced in the hinge part of the shell, to which is tied a short cord of twisted pandanus.

Volute = a spiral turn or convolution, a whorl in a spiral shell, tropical volutoid gastropod. Used as pendant neck ornament [+ Hayter's signature]'. [in pencil in the bottom left corner:] '1/232'. [stamped in the bottom right corner:] 'SHOW CASE NUMBER 1'. A small round red sticker pasted to the front of the card. A black and white photograph of the object stapled to the back of the card.
