Kava drinking cup, priests, bowl and handle of wood, "bilo ni yangona" = kava drinking cup, bilo kau = wooden cup, cut in imitation of mountain coconut. Scarce.' [added in pencil:] '1875'. [stamped in black ink:] 'THE VON H�GEL COLLECTION circa 1875. [in pencil in the bottom left corner:] '12/102' and '409'. [stamped in black ink:] 'CUMAA 27 MAY 1988 TRANSCRIBED'. [stamped in blue ink in the bottom right corner:] 'SHOW CASE NUMBER 12'. A round red sticker pasted on the card. A black and white photograph of the object stapled to the back of the card.

Description (CMS Description)
Yaqona cup carved from a solid piece of vesi wood to resemble the coconut cup with woven coir handle. The body of the cup is round as that of a coconut. The handle is triangular in shape and carved with bands of zigzags in relief on the top and back. The width of the handle is pitted. It is provided with a suspension cord of 3-ply plaited coir attached to two holes drilled in the width of the handle and two holes drilled underneath the handle. It is knotted at the base and at the end.

Resembles coconut cup with woven coir handle. The body of the cup is round as that of a coconut. The handle is triangular and carved with bands of zigzags in relief on the top and back.
