Description (CMS Description)
Circular priests' yaqona dish, dark coloured, carved from a solid piece of vesi wood. The dish is supported by a ring base from the inside of which two mirrored L-shaped legs project upwards. A deep groove runs along the full length of the ring base. A cord of 3-ply plaited coir is is placed in the grooved and knotted at the end. Another small 3-ply plaited cord of coir is wrapped around the ring seven times and tied in a knot, forming an additional binging or hiding a repair. The same is repeated once more at another location on the ring with a slightly lighter coir. Another cord of 3-ply plaited coir has been wrapped twice around the legs of the dish and tied in a knot. The dish is dark brown in colour, the yaqona surface is medium brown in colour. On the surface in what seems like a whole in a natural knot in the wood, another cord of plated coconut fibre has been put and tied in a knot. From this knot several cracks extend inwards on the surface of the bowl. Two other small cracks are also visible on the surface. Near the centre of the surface a large liquid stain is visible. The inside of the corner of one of the legs is stained white. The bottom of the dish is chipped in several places. On the bottom and surface of the dish small white specks of ?paint are visible. The bottom of the base is severely chipped in one place.
