Description (CMS Description)
Headrest formed of cylindrical wooden bar (52.7 cm long x 3.4 cm diameter) resting on two legs of vesi wood. The bar is medium-brown in colour and the wood shows a distinctive wavy grain. The bottom of the bar is pierced with holes to which are secured the legs. The legs are cut at the top to match the exact shape of the bar. The legs and bar are lashed with 3-ply plaited coir (one lashing is slightly lighter in colour than the other one. Each leg is provided with a pair of flat and circular feet. On both legs, on each side, the top of the leg is inlaid with small pieces of whale ivory. One leg has three ivory circles decreasing in size from top to bottom on one side and three larger circles also decreasing in size from top to bottom on the other side. The other leg is inlaid with a lozenge of ivory (maintained in place with a very small peg of ?metal or ?wood) on one side and four circles of ivory decreasing in size from top to bottom on the other side. One of the legs is broken and has been re-attached with a wooden peg. This repair has now become loose. A few white specks of pain on the top of the legs and feet. 'Z- 3665' and 'O.X.455.H.' inscribed in white ink on the side of one of the legs.
