This was the part of a figure presented to the collector, name of donor unknown, and was separated from the body part on account of transportation difficulties. Matakau = image or idol. Scarce.' [added in pencil:] '"Idol" idea possibly a missionaries. The Fijian did not worship idols [+ Hayter's signature]'. [stamped in black ink:] 'THE VON HÜGEL COLLECTION CIRCA 1875.' [in pencil in the bottom left corner:] '3/225'. [added in pencil:] 'OX 428 H'. [added in black ink:] '(Centenary Exhibition). [stamped in blue ink in the bottom right corner:] 'SHOW CASE NUMBER 3'. Heavy carved head of dark vesi wood, slightly smaller than life-size. Originally belonging to a larger piece but sawn off at the top of the neck. Small protruding oval ears. Naturalistic nose with carved nostrils. Round eye sockets in the middle of which elongated oval eyelids and eyes are protruding. A horizontal incisions marks the mouth, framed by slightly raised lips. Several cracks run vertically from the top of the head. On one particularly large one has split the head at the back. The flat sawn part underneath the head is very light in colour.
