Description (CMS Description)
Necklace formed of 8 human figures carved from whale ivory, interspaced with 9 horn-shaped pendants of whale ivory, the bottom half of which is notched. Figures and pendants are pierced at the back and strung on a cord formed of several length of rigid ?vine / plant fibre around which 7 strands of very fine 3-ply plaited coir are bound. At each end, the cords terminated in a knot. The figures and pendants are of a light cream colour at the front and of a much darker honey-orange colour at the back. The cord is weak. Context (CMS Context)
Published in Pacific Encounters exhibition catalogue (2006: 249) with the following caption: 'This unique necklace is composed of eight figures and nine other pendants. All the figures are pierced for suspension at the back of the head; it is not know what the other pendants represent, but the distinctive notching is paralleled in Nos 231-2 and Tongan food hooks of Cook voyage vintage (Kaeppler 1974:79). The main figure appears to be carved in a Fijian style, with a band across the forehead. The darker honey colour of the back of the pendants is the result of contact with scented coconut oil.'
