Description (CMS Description)
Necklace (waseisei) formed of 29 tusks carved from whale teeth, pierced and the top and strung on a cord of very fine 3-ply plaited coir. An additional length of very fine 3-ply plaited coir is woven around the cord and between the top of the tusks. The tusks are curving outwards and tapering. The tusks are of a light yellow colour at the front with a darker shade of yellow at the back. The object is in very poor condition. A string of plastic has been inserted through the holes at the top of the tusks to provide some additional support. The cord is broken in many places and seems to have been glued back together. One end of the cord is broken. 'Z. 2751' and '1923.H129' inscribed in black ink on the last tooth from the left.
