Breastplate of ivory. The ivory is of relatively great width.

Breastplate formed of a single almost rectangular piece of whale bone. The width of the object is serrated. A groove is carved along the edge of the sides and bottom. Two holes are pierced at the top. The front is cream/light honey in colour. The back is very textured and has a very dark honey colour (almost orange). '1923.H167.' and 'Z. 2747' inscribed in black ink on the front of the object.

[added in pencil by Hayter:] 'The ivory is of relatively great width. There are 3 Tholo provinces N. E. & W. Whale bone (shoulder or hip) NOT tooth JJH'. [stamped in black ink:] 'THE VON HÜGEL COLLECTION CIRCA 1875.' [in pencil in the bottom left corner:] '1/264'. [added in blue pen:] '1923 H.167'. [added in black ink:] '(Centenary Exhibition)'. [stamped in blue ink:] 'SHOW CASE NUMBER 1'. A small round red sticker pasted to the card.
