Catalogue card 1 reads [stamped in black ink:] 'Z- 2755 A-D FIJI]. [typed:] 'Viti Levu. Pendants of pigs tusks, 4 in number, a, b, c, d. "Bati" (Mbati) ni vuaka, bati = tooth, ni = of, vuaka = pig. A very favourite neck ornament for young men and particularly with fighting men. Most of the "extraordinary" pigs teeth were formerly imported from Tana and the New Hebrides, but the Fijians were not unacquainted with the method causing their characteristic growth which is said to be accomplished by knocking out the upper teeth so as to prevent all possibility of friction against the tusks when the animal grinds his teeth. 2 Gordon, 1 Hugel collected, 1 Hugel bought.' [added in blue pen:] '1884.G51; 1923.G50; 1923.H171; 1923.H172.' [stamped in blue ink:] 'SHOW CASE NUMBER 1'. A small round red sticker pasted on the card. '(Centenary Exhibition)' inscribed in black ink on the back of the card.
