Context (Production / use)
Hodson (1919:70-71) gives the following description of Konso grave markers: 'To the south of Gardula there is a native race called Konso... Their graves are the most interesting I ever saw, with a carved image of the dead man and, by his side, his wife, and then on each side images of the different people and animals he has killed in his lifetime, each race shown by a different image. Abyssinians are always shown riding a mule; the Boran has a distinct type, the natives of Sidano another. There are also different signs for elephant, giraffe, lion, etc., so that any old man can tell you at a glance the bag of the deceased man. Some of them must have been great warriors, as I have myself counted up to twenty images of the people the deceased had killed during his lifetime.'
